Objectives of the session:

 

The session on food security in the country will focus on three main topics: livestock, agriculture, and fishery. The session will begin with a keynote address by a leading expert on food security, followed by three presentations of policy briefs on the three main areas. The policy briefs will be presented by the following universities:

 

  • Somaliland Agricultural Research Center: “Investment in Sustainable Food System for Sustainable Food Security”
  • Amoud University: Unlocking the potential of Somaliland’s Fishery Sector and Marine Ecosystem.
  • Burao University: “Livestock Productivity, Investment and Sustainability.

The session will conclude with a panel discussion on the challenges and opportunities for food security in the country. The panel will be moderated by an expert in the field of food security.

The session on food security is a valuable opportunity for policymakers, researchers, and the public to learn about the challenges and opportunities for food security in the country. The session will also provide a forum for discussing and developing solutions to these challenges.

The panel discussion will revolve around the following topics:

  • Livestock:
    • Livestock rearing. Understand more on the current rearing situation of the livestock, challenges and way forward
    • Livestock infrastructure. Understand more about the current situation of livestock markets and slaughterhouses, quarantines, as well as transportation and storage facilities, challenges and way forward.
    • Promote livestock exports. This includes negotiating trade agreements with other countries, as well as providing market information to exporters.
    • Agriculture:
    • Promote agricultural development. i.e farmers with access to improved seeds, fertilizers, and irrigation systems. It also includes investing in research and development to develop new crops
    • Promote agricultural diversification. This involves encouraging farmers to raise a variety of crops and livestock, which will help to reduce their risk of crop failure or livestock losses.
    • Access to water and management: Water is a scarce resource in Somaliland, so it is important to ensure that farmers have access to water for irrigation including building dams and reservoirs, and developing water conservation technique.
    • Improve access to credit. This will help farmers and other food producers to invest in new technologies and practices that can improve their resilience to shocks and stresses.
  • Marine resources
    • Fishing; i.e promote sustainable fishing practices, fish processing and marketing facilities such as fish processing plants and cold storage facilities, as well as improving transportation and marketing networks and fish exports.
