Objectives of the session
The session will focus on the following key areas for discussion:
- Current status for mining in Somaliland and challenges to improving the sector: Somaliland has a number of known mineral deposits, but the mining sector is still in its early stages of development. Some of the challenges to improving the sector include a lack of investment, a lack of skilled labor, and a weak legal and regulatory framework.
- Potential mining sites: There are a number of potential mining sites in Somaliland, but more exploration is needed to determine their full potential. The baseline assessment on Mining and Minerals must provide more information on this.
- Legal and regulatory framework: Somaliland has a mining code that provides the legal framework for the mining sector. However, the code is still under development and there are some gaps that need to be addressed.
- Promoting investment in mining: Somaliland is looking to attract investment in the mining sector.
